Quick verdict
A template built by a deck builder that lays over the deck surface and marks the exact base position and the four structural screw pilot holes for 2 and 3 inch aluminum railing posts used by TimberTech Impression Rail Express and several similar systems, with ruled edges and centre marks so a run of posts comes out in a straight line at an even spacing. Surface-mount aluminum posts are unforgiving: a base set a quarter inch off shows in the top rail. The jig removes the measuring.
Strengths
- Marks base position and all pilot holes in one placement
- Ruled edges and centre marks keep a run of posts aligned
- Fits 2 and 3 inch aluminum post bases
- Covers IRX, Aria, Harmony, Ultralox and Williams railings
- Built by a deck builder for the real sequence of the job
Weaknesses
- Specific to surface-mount aluminum post systems
- Not made or endorsed by TimberTech; check the base pattern
- A one-deck purchase for most homeowners
The overall YardToolLab Score is out of 100. Section scores are out of 10.
Posts That Line Up
Aluminum deck railing is sold in fixed sections, and the posts have to sit where the sections expect them. Surface-mount bases make that a layout job on the deck surface, with four structural screws per base that cannot be moved once driven. Tool & Trade’s jig is a template with ruled edges, centre marks and pilot hole guides for the 2 and 3 inch aluminum bases used by TimberTech Impression Rail Express and several similar systems, built by a deck builder who was tired of measuring each one.
This review is based on the listing specifications and on how surface-mount railing posts are laid out generally. We have not used this jig ourselves and it is not made or endorsed by TimberTech or the other named brands.
Using It
Snap a chalk line along the run where the post centres sit. Set the jig with its edge on the line and its centre mark at the first post position, hold it down and drill the pilot holes through the guides. Slide to the next post spacing, align, drill. Each base then drops onto its four holes and screws down square. A run of ten posts is laid out in minutes rather than an hour of tape and square.
Why It Pays
An aluminum rail section is cut to the gap between posts, and a post an eighth of an inch off makes a section that will not fit or a top rail with a kink. The jig puts every base on the same line at the same spacing, which is what makes the finished rail look like it came that way.
Compatibility
The jig is cut for the common 2 and 3 inch aluminum base patterns of IRX, Aria, Harmony, Ultralox and Williams railings. Compare the base plate holes with the jig before relying on it; the maker is clear it is independent of those brands.
What It Does Not Do
It does not provide the blocking under the deck that surface-mount posts need, and it does not check that the deck board under the base is sound. Those are the builder’s job before the jig comes out.
Build
A rigid template with clear markings that survives a job site. For a homeowner it is a one-deck purchase; for a builder it goes in the truck.
Who Should Buy It
- Anyone installing IRX or similar aluminum railing on a deck.
- Deck builders who set posts every week.
- DIYers who want the rail to fit first time.
Common Owner Complaints
Limited to the listed base patterns. Check the holes.
Alternatives to Consider
A story pole and a speed square for a few posts. The railing maker’s own template if offered. A fascia-mount bracket system that avoids surface layout.
Verdict
For a run of surface-mount aluminum posts, the jig turns the layout into a repeatable drill-through and the rail fits because of it. Snap the line, confirm the base pattern and get the blocking in first.

Tool & Trade Post Layout Jig for TimberTech Impression Rail Express IRX 2 and 3 Inch Aluminum Post Bases FAQs
Snap a line along the post run, set the jig to the line and the centre mark to the post spacing, drill the pilot holes through the guides, move to the next post. The base then screws straight to the marked holes.
Aluminum rail sections are cut to a fixed length between posts. A post an eighth out of line or spacing means a rail that does not fit or a run that wanders.
Check the base plate hole pattern against the jig. It is made for the common 2 and 3 inch aluminum bases used by the listed systems.
Surface-mount posts need solid blocking between joists under each base. The jig marks the holes; the blocking still has to be there.
