Quick verdict
A box with a hundred 1 3/4 inch screws, 105 colour-matched plugs cut from Trex board, a counterbore setting tool and a plug setter, covering 50 linear feet of Trex fascia so the board is screwed through the face and the screw heads vanish under plugs of the same material and colour. Fascia is the visible edge of a deck and a row of screw heads is what people see; Cortex is the system the composite makers specify for a clean face. The plugs are the fascia colour, so order the colour of the board.
Strengths
- Screw heads hidden under plugs of the same Trex material and colour
- Setting tool counterbores to the right depth every time
- Hundred screws and 105 plugs cover 50 linear feet
- The method Trex specifies for fascia
- Holds fascia through expansion without the cracking of nails
Weaknesses
- Colour-specific; the plugs must match the fascia
- Fascia only; deck boards use a different Cortex kit
- Costs more than face screws left showing
The overall YardToolLab Score is out of 100. Section scores are out of 10.
The Edge Everyone Sees
Deck boards get hidden clips and the fascia, the board that faces the garden, gets a row of screw heads. Cortex is the answer the composite makers settled on: face screws under plugs cut from the same board. FastenMaster’s Trex fascia kit is a hundred screws, 105 plugs in the fascia colour, a counterbore setting tool and a plug setter, enough for 50 linear feet.
This review is based on the maker’s specifications and on how the Cortex system is used on composite fascia generally. We have not used this kit ourselves.
How It Goes On
Fit the setting tool to the drill. Each screw is driven through the fascia into the rim joist and the tool counterbores a hole of the right depth around the head in the same stroke. Tap a plug into the hole with the setter until it sits flush. The plug is Trex in the fascia colour and the grain runs the same way, so from a step back there is nothing to see. Fifty feet of fascia is an afternoon.
Why It Beats Nails and Screws
Composite fascia expands and contracts with heat more than wood. Nails loosen and screws left showing are silver dots in a row. Cortex screws grip and the plugs move with the board, so the face stays clean for the life of the deck.
Colour
The plugs are cut from Trex deck board, so the kit is sold per colour and the colour must match the fascia. Spiced Rum is a warm brown; other colours have their own kits. Order the fascia and the kit in the same colour name.
What Is in the Box
Screws, plugs with a few spare, the counterbore tool that sets the depth and the plug setter. Nothing else is needed beyond the drill.
Fascia Only
Deck boards use the Cortex deck kit with longer screws and a different setter. This kit is the 1 3/4 inch fascia version.
Who Should Buy It
- Anyone fitting Trex fascia.
- Deck builders who want the edge to match the hidden-fastened surface.
- Homeowners replacing rotten wood fascia with composite.
Common Owner Complaints
Wrong colour ordered. Match the fascia name exactly.
Technique Tips
Keep the drill square to the fascia so the counterbore is round and the plug sits flat, and tap the plugs in with the grain running the same way as the board so the join disappears. Set a few spare plugs aside for the inevitable one that splits.
Alternatives to Consider
Cortex kits in other Trex colours. Colour-matched fascia screws without plugs for a budget finish. Stainless trim screws on wood fascia.
Verdict
For composite fascia with no screw heads on show, Cortex is the specified method and this kit covers 50 feet with the tools included. Match the colour, let the tool set the depth and tap the plugs flush.

FastenMaster Cortex Concealed Fastening System for Trex Fascia, 50 Linear Feet, Spiced Rum FAQs
The setting tool drives the screw and counterbores the hole to a set depth in one action. A plug is tapped into the hole with the setter and sits flush, matching the board. The screw is gone.
A row of silver heads along the fascia is the first thing seen from the garden. Composite also expands, and nails work loose; Cortex screws hold and the plugs hide them.
The fascia colour. Each kit is sold in a Trex colour and the plugs are cut from that board. Spiced Rum is the brown in this listing.
Trex specifies the spacing; two screws per joist location is typical. The kit covers 50 feet at that rate.
