Quick verdict

Stihl's 2-in-1 file guide sharpens the cutter and lowers the depth gauge in one stroke, which removes the step most people skip and the reason most hand-sharpened chains cut badly. This version fits standard 3/8 inch pitch chain. Buy the matching pitch for your chain, use it every tank of fuel, and a chain stays sharp for its whole life.

Why Most Hand-Sharpened Chains Cut Badly

Ask a saw shop why a customer’s hand-sharpened chain will not cut and the answer is almost always the same: the depth gauges were never lowered. Each time a cutter is filed back it gets shorter, and the small raker in front of it has to drop by the same amount or the cutter cannot bite. Most people file the cutters and forget the rakers. Stihl’s 2-in-1 Easy File solves that by holding a round file and a flat file in one guide, so every stroke sharpens the cutter and lowers the raker together at the correct angle.

This review is based on Stihl’s documentation and on owner feedback rather than on our own use.

How It Works

The guide sits over the chain with marks that align to the bar. Push forward along the cutter and the round file sharpens the edge while the flat file takes the raker down in proportion. Three or four strokes per cutter is normal maintenance. Flip the guide for the opposite side cutters. Owners describe a learning period of a chain or two before the motion feels natural, after which a full chain takes a few minutes.

Matching the Pitch

This is the critical purchase detail. This version, Stihl part 5605 750 4305, is for standard 3/8 inch pitch chain with larger files. Many battery saws and small gas saws use 3/8 P low profile chain, which has smaller cutters and needs the separate 3/8 P version. There are also .325 and .404 versions. The pitch is stamped on the bar or chain drive link; buying the wrong one is the most common complaint in owner feedback and is entirely avoidable.

Results

Owners who sharpen at every refuel report chains that cut as well at the end of their life as at the start, and that throw proper chips rather than dust. Compared with a bench grinder, the file removes less metal per sharpening so chains last longer, and compared with a bare file it keeps angles consistent without skill. Compared with paying a shop, it pays for itself in two or three visits.

Maintenance of the Tool

The files are replaceable and wear with use; a set lasts many chains. Keep the guide clean and store it dry. The handles are plastic and comfortable enough for the short sessions involved.

Common Owner Complaints

Wrong pitch purchased is the overwhelming one. A few owners find the first chain awkward to align. Once learned, complaints essentially disappear.

Alternatives to Consider

Oregon’s bench chain grinder suits owners with many chains who want speed over metal preservation. Pferd makes an equivalent 2-in-1 guide, and Stihl sells the matching 3/8 P and .325 versions of this tool for other chains.

Verdict

For anyone who runs a chainsaw more than once a year, the 2-in-1 Easy File is the best small purchase available. It makes correct sharpening automatic, costs little and extends chain life. Check your pitch, buy the right version, and use it often.

Stihl 2-in-1 Easy File Chainsaw Sharpener (3/8 inch) FAQs

Which version do I need?

Match the pitch stamped on your chain or bar. Standard 3/8 inch chain uses this 4305 version. Many battery and small saws use 3/8 P low profile chain, which needs the separate 3/8 P version.

How often should I sharpen?

A few strokes per cutter at every refuel or battery change keeps the chain sharp. Waiting until it is dull means much more filing.

Does it work on the saw?

Yes. Secure the bar, engage the chain brake, and file each cutter following the guide marks, then rotate the chain.

Why lower the depth gauges?

As cutters are filed back they get shorter, and the depth gauge in front must drop with them or the chain stops biting. The 2-in-1 does both at once.
