Editorial correction and disclosure: This is a research-based review of the ELEY Model 1041 standard-capacity wall-mount garden hose reel. The old page mixed several ELEY wall, free-standing and cart reels, repeated an inaccurate U.S.-manufacturing claim and carried an unsupported editorial score. ELEY’s current records say its garden hoses are U.S.-made, while its hose reels and watering tools use global manufacturing partners. The Model 1041 is a manual-crank, aluminum-alloy wall reel for buyers who value rigid construction, replaceable parts and configurable installation more than low price or automatic retraction. Long-term owner accounts repeatedly praise stable operation, smooth winding and resistance to the rust and cracking associated with cheaper plastic boxes. The important qualifications are price, the need for a sound structural mount, freeze protection, and occasional reports involving the inlet hose, swivel, brake or wall-plate connection.

It is a strong candidate when you want a permanent wall reel and will install and winterize it correctly. It is not the right format for renters, weak mounting surfaces, people who need a portable cart, or anyone expecting a self-retracting spring reel.

Exact model and verified specifications

Capacity varies with hose outside diameter and construction, so the ELEY-hose options are not a guarantee that every third-party 125-foot hose will fit. Also note the flow-path nuance: the swivel is 3/4 inch, but the supplied inlet hose is 5/8 inch. ELEY says a buyer who wants a complete 3/4-inch flow path must provide a separate 3/4-inch inlet hose.

What is different about the 1041?

Unlike an enclosed plastic reel or spring-retracting unit, the 1041 uses an open metal drum, a hand crank and an adjustable cam-lever brake. The brake adds drag so the drum does not keep unwinding after you stop pulling. The same reel can face along the wall or project outward, which helps with space planning, but it does not pivot freely during use. The main hose is optional; the base no-hose package includes the short inlet hose but not the long watering hose.

The aluminum construction avoids iron rust, but “rust-proof” should not be read as maintenance-free. ELEY recommends freshwater rinsing near saltwater shorelines, excludes normal UV fading, and gives the powder-coat finish a shorter warranty than the reel hardware.

• Long service life: independent owners report wall reels still in use after roughly five, ten, twelve or more years. Those accounts are encouraging but are anecdotes, not a controlled lifespan study.

• Mount and brake issues: one recent wall-reel owner reports that the locking arrangement did not work and the reel slid off its mount; others describe several years of trouble-free wall use. Installation error, an isolated defect and product variation cannot be separated from the available account.
• Leaks: reports include a failed short inlet hose and occasional leakage at a swivel or seal. ELEY’s own support library has a dedicated reel-leak diagnostic, confirming these are serviceable failure points, but it does not establish a defect rate.
• Freeze damage: owners describe elbows or plugs cracking when water was left inside during freezing weather. The warranty excludes freeze damage, so draining the reel is an operating requirement rather than optional cosmetic care.
• Warranty experience is mixed: some owners report prompt parts and helpful service; others report slow or unanswered claims. The written warranty covers replacement of the defective component, not automatic replacement of the entire reel.
• Not a U.S.-made reel: ELEY states that current reels are made through global manufacturing partners. Buyers specifically seeking a wholly U.S.-manufactured reel should not infer that from ELEY’s U.S.-made hose claim.

ELEY says reviews on its own site can be submitted only by verified owners invited about two weeks after shipment. That verifies an order but favors early ownership and is not independent of the seller. 4. Inspect the inlet hose, swivel and washers if a leak appears; do not assume the drum itself has failed.
5. Drain the hose, inlet line and reel water path before freezing weather.
6. Rinse salt deposits in coastal locations and expect normal finish fading to fall outside the main warranty.

Who should buy it?

Choose the 1041 if you have a permanent, structurally sound mounting point and want a manually wound reel with documented parts support. Choose the 1041X only when the larger hose capacity is actually needed. For a movable setup, compare a two- or four-wheel cart instead; for one-handed rewind, compare a true retractable reel and accept the added spring mechanism.
