How you store a garden hose decides how long it lasts. Sun, freezing water, and tight coiling are the three things that age a hose fastest. Here is how to store it right year round.

Everyday storage

Keep the hose off the ground and out of direct sunlight, which degrades the material over time. A hose reel or a wide wall hanger holds it in large loops that prevent the permanent kinks tight coiling creates. Drain the hose after use so standing water does not stagnate inside.

Winterizing before a freeze

Water expands when it freezes, and trapped water can split a hose or crack its fittings. Before the first hard freeze: disconnect the hose from the tap, drain it completely by stretching it downhill or lifting it end over end, then coil it loosely and store it somewhere dry such as a shed or garage. Leaving a full hose outdoors through winter is the most common way hoses die.

A note on outdoor storage

Even drained, prolonged outdoor storage exposes the hose to temperature swings that accelerate material ageing. Indoor or sheltered storage meaningfully extends a hose’s life. Disconnect the tap side too, so any water left in the spigot does not freeze back into the fitting.
