Teknor Apex also lists 25-foot model 4001-25 and 100-foot model 4001-100. Feedback about another length can help reveal a construction theme, but it is not exact-model failure-rate data for the 4001-50.
It is not an expandable hose
The fabric jacket can make zero-G look like an expandable hose, but the 50-foot model remains about 50 feet long whether pressurized or empty. It becomes flatter and more compact when drained, without relying on an expanding latex tube. That distinction matters: it can be stored on a hose reel, and it does not promise the self-contracting behavior of an expandable design. - Lower carrying effort: light weight and a flexible body are the most consistent positives across the exact-model Walmart and Lowe’s records and independent gardening discussions.
- Compact storage: owners report that it drains flatter and takes less space than a conventional round hose. Teknor Apex says it is safe to use on a hose reel.
- Useful flow for ordinary watering: the manufacturer states that its flow is comparable with a conventional 5/8-inch hose. That is a specification claim, not our own flow test.
- Long service is possible: several independent owners describe three to six years of use, and a few report longer. These positive accounts conflict with early-failure reports, so they do not establish an expected lifespan.
Complaints, conflicts and likely failure points
- Leaks at the coupling: exact 4001-50 reviews include first-use or early leaks around a fitting. Independent owners also describe the fabric or inner hose failing near the connector. These are recurring anecdotes, not a measured defect rate.
- Stuck fittings: some owners report a coupling becoming difficult to remove after remaining attached. Teknor Apex describes a brass insert intended to reduce corrosion, but prolonged wet contact between different metals can still make threaded connections troublesome. Periodic disconnection is prudent.
- Abrasion and puncture: the woven jacket is advertised as abrasion- and puncture-resistant, not damage-proof. Sharp masonry, thorns, vehicle traffic and pet chewing remain credible risks.
- Kinking is reduced, not eliminated: many owners praise easy handling and fewer kinks, while others still report occasional flow-stopping folds, especially when the hose is sharply routed or only partly pressurized.
- Climate and storage change the outcome: multi-year reports exist, but one desert-climate owner describes replacement every one or two years. That conflict makes a universal durability claim such as “most durable” unjustified.

Who should buy it?
Best fit: small and medium yards, routine watering, people who struggle with a heavy conventional hose, and users who can store the hose away from sharp edges and prolonged sun. A shorter supply hose plus zero-G as the movable end section is another owner-suggested setup when reach and maneuverability are both needed.
