Quick verdict

Twelve honeycomb panels covering 64 square feet that snap together without tools, fill with gravel and make a firm, permeable surface for driveways, paths, parking pads and patios. The cells lock the gravel so it does not rut, spread or wash away, while rain drains straight through instead of running off. Strol rates the panels for heavy loads when properly based. A permeable gravel surface is the simplest way to cut runoff from a driveway or shed base.

Strengths

  • Keeps gravel in place: no ruts, migration or washout
  • Water drains through rather than running off
  • Tool-free snap-lock assembly
  • Rated for vehicle loads on a proper base
  • Cuts with a saw to fit curves and edges

Weaknesses

  • Needs an excavated, compacted base and fabric to perform
  • Sixty-four square feet is a path or pad; driveways need many packs
  • Exposed cell edges show if gravel is not kept topped up

Gravel That Stays Put and Lets Rain Through

Loose gravel ruts under tyres, migrates into the lawn and washes down the slope in a storm. A honeycomb grid holds it: each cell confines its gravel, the wheel load spreads across the panel and rain drains straight through to the ground. Strol’s PebbleLock pack is twelve snap-together panels covering 64 square feet, rated for heavy loads when filled and laid on a compacted base.

This review is based on the maker’s specifications and on how plastic gravel stabilization grids are installed and perform generally. We have not installed this grid ourselves.

How It Works

Filled cells cannot let gravel roll sideways, so there is nowhere for a rut to form. The panel spreads a tyre’s weight over several square feet of base. Because the fill is open gravel, water passes through as fast as it falls, which is the point for drainage: a driveway or pad that absorbs rain instead of shedding it toward the house or the street.

Installation

The grid is only as good as what is under it. Excavate 4 inches for a path and 6 to 8 for vehicles, lay non-woven geotextile, add crushed stone base and compact it, snap the panels together and fill them with angular gravel to just above the cell walls. Angular stone locks; rounded pea gravel rolls and performs poorly. Cut panels with a hand saw to meet curves and edges.

Coverage

Sixty-four square feet is a garden path, a shed base, a bin store or a motorbike pad. A single-car parking space needs about three packs; a driveway, many more. The panels interlock across packs so the surface is continuous.

Looks and Upkeep

Properly filled, the grid disappears under the gravel. Keep the fill topped up so cell edges do not show, and rake occasionally. Weeds that seed into the gravel pull easily because they cannot root through the fabric.

Who Should Buy It

  • Homeowners with a gravel drive that ruts.
  • Anyone building a shed base, path or parking pad.
  • Properties with runoff problems who want a permeable surface.

Common Owner Complaints

Panels that shift on a poor base and gravel that looks thin. Compact the base and fill generously.

Edging

Gravel grid needs a restraint at the perimeter or the outer cells creep. Set the panels against existing paving, a timber edge or a plastic landscape edging pinned with spikes, and fill to the edge. Where the grid meets lawn, a flush edging strip lets the mower run over without catching.

Alternatives to Consider

TRUEGRID and Core Gravel are long-established grids at higher prices. Permeable concrete pavers give a formal look. Plain compacted crushed stone works for low-traffic paths without a grid.

Verdict

For a firm gravel surface that drains instead of running off, a grid is the right approach and this pack is good value for a path or pad. Do the base properly, use angular stone and it will carry cars for years.

Strol PebbleLock Heavy-Duty Interlocking Permeable Paver Grid, 12 Pack, 64 Square Feet FAQs

How do I prepare the base?

Excavate 4 to 8 inches depending on load, lay geotextile fabric, add and compact crushed stone base, then lay the grid and fill it with angular gravel to just above the cell tops.

What gravel?

Angular crushed stone from 3/8 to 3/4 inch locks together. Rounded pea gravel rolls and will not stabilize as well.

Will it take a car?

Yes with a compacted base. The cells spread the wheel load across the base so the gravel does not rut.

Why permeable?

Rain soaks through to the ground instead of running to the street or the house. It reduces puddles, erosion and in many places counts toward stormwater rules.
