Quick verdict

A moulded spillway box with an 8 inch weir and an internal baffle that takes the pump outlet, calms the turbulence and pours a smooth even sheet of water over the lip, which is the difference between a waterfall and a hose end. It sits at the top of a rock or liner waterfall or at the end of a stream, connects to standard tubing and is sized for small and medium ponds and for disappearing water features. Pond Boss is a long-running pond equipment brand.

Strengths

  • Internal baffle turns pump turbulence into a smooth sheet
  • Eight inch weir suits small and medium waterfalls
  • Connects to standard pond tubing
  • Works for pond waterfalls and pondless features
  • Durable moulded plastic from an established pond brand

Weaknesses

  • Eight inches is a modest width; big falls want a wider weir
  • Must be set dead level or the sheet runs to one side
  • Liner must be attached to the box lip to avoid leaks behind it

From Gurgle to Sheet

A pump hose poking out between rocks makes a waterfall that gurgles and splashes to one side. A spillway box makes one that pours. Pond Boss’s 8 inch spillway takes the pump outlet into a chamber, calms it behind a baffle and releases it over a straight 8 inch lip as a smooth sheet, for small and medium pond waterfalls and pondless features.

This review is based on the maker’s specifications and on how spillway boxes are installed in pond construction generally. We have not installed this spillway ourselves.

The Baffle

Water from a pump arrives in a turbulent jet. The baffle inside the box breaks that jet and lets the chamber fill evenly, so the water reaching the lip is calm and leaves it in a sheet. That sheet is what sounds and looks like a waterfall; without it, the same pump makes a noisy splash.

Installation

Dig a level shelf at the top of the fall, compact it and set the box dead level, since a lip a few millimetres off pours to one side. Connect the pump tubing to the inlet. Attach the liner to the lip of the box with the clamp strip or sealant the instructions describe, so water cannot run behind the liner, which is where waterfalls leak. Build rock around the box and under the lip so the sheet falls onto stone.

Flow

An 8 inch weir looks right with about 800 to 1,500 gallons per hour. Below that the sheet thins to a trickle; far above it the baffle cannot calm the flow. Size the pump to the weir and the head height.

Pondless

The same box tops a disappearing waterfall that falls into a gravel basin over a reservoir, which gives the sound and movement of water without an open pond.

Who Should Buy It

  • Anyone building a small pond waterfall or a stream head.
  • Owners of a splashy waterfall that was never right.
  • Builders of pondless water features.

Common Owner Complaints

A sheet that runs to one side and leaks behind the box. Level it; attach the liner properly.

Finishing Tips

Set a flat stone under the lip so the sheet falls onto rock rather than liner, and bring rocks up each side of the box to hide it. Run the pump before backfilling around the box to check the sheet is even and the liner seal holds. A small adjustment with a wedge under one side corrects a sheet that pours to the left or right. Clear leaves from the chamber each autumn.

Alternatives to Consider

Aquascape and Atlantic spillways in wider sizes for bigger falls. A spillway with built-in filter media for a combined unit. A formed stone lip for a natural look with more skill required.

Verdict

For a small waterfall that pours instead of splashes, an 8 inch baffled spillway is the right start and Pond Boss’s is sound. Set it level, seal the liner to the lip and match the pump to the weir.

Pond Boss 8 Inch Wide Weir Waterfall Spillway Box with Built-In Baffle FAQs

Why a spillway box?

A pump outlet dumped on rocks splashes and gurgles. The box slows the water behind a baffle and releases it evenly over a straight lip, so it falls as a sheet with the sound of a real waterfall.

How do I install it?

Set the box level at the top of the fall on compacted soil, connect the pump tubing to the inlet, attach the liner to the lip with the clamp or sealant per the instructions, and build rock around and under the lip.

What pump flow?

For an 8 inch weir, roughly 800 to 1,500 gallons per hour gives a full sheet. Less looks thin; more overwhelms the baffle.

Does it filter?

No. It is a spillway only. Filtration is a separate unit; some larger spillway boxes include filter media.
