Quick verdict

A 15.75 by 78.7 inch sheet of clear PET that wraps around a tree trunk or feeder pole as a smooth collar squirrels cannot grip, so they drop off instead of climbing to the fruit or the feeder. Transparent plastic keeps the tree looking natural and the smooth surface works without spikes or harm. It fits trunks up to about 2 feet around; the collar must be high enough and wide enough that squirrels cannot jump past it from the ground or a nearby branch.

A Trunk They Cannot Climb

Squirrels strip fruit trees, empty feeders and chew bark, and they do it by climbing. A smooth collar around the trunk gives their claws nothing to hold. Peotaotou’s baffle is a 15.75 by 78.7 inch sheet of clear PET that wraps a trunk or pole and fastens into a slippery band, nearly invisible on the bark and harmless to the animals.

This review is based on the listing specifications and on how smooth trunk baffles perform against squirrels generally. We have not used this baffle ourselves and the brand is a generic importer.

Placement Is Everything

A baffle works only if the squirrel cannot bypass it. The bottom edge should be at least 5 feet above ground, beyond a standing jump, and the band itself about 2 feet tall so they cannot reach over it. Any branch, fence top, shed roof or neighbouring tree within 8 to 10 feet is a launch pad, and the tree must be isolated or that route pruned. Owners whose baffles failed almost always had a bypass.

Fitting

Wrap the sheet around the trunk, overlap the ends and fasten with cable ties through punched holes or a band of tape, leaving a finger of slack so the trunk can grow. Check it each spring and loosen as needed; a tight band girdles a tree. On a feeder pole, wrap it as a cylinder or form a cone with the wide end down.

Material

Clear PET keeps the tree looking natural and is smooth enough that claws slide. Sun clouds and stiffens it over several years, which is cosmetic until it cracks. Spiked guards do the same job and look like it; smooth plastic is the kinder, tidier version.

Other Climbers

Raccoons after fruit and cats after nesting birds meet the same slippery band and give up.

Who Should Buy It

  • Fruit tree owners losing the crop to squirrels.
  • Bird feeder owners with a pole-mounted feeder.
  • Anyone protecting a nest box from cats and raccoons.

Common Owner Complaints

Squirrels that still got up. Look for the bypass branch or fence.

Checking It Works

Watch the tree for a few days after fitting. A squirrel that reaches the baffle and drops is the band doing its job; one that appears above it has found a route round, and the branch or fence it used is the next thing to deal with. Dust the band occasionally; a film of grime gives claws a little purchase.

Alternatives to Consider

Metal cone baffles for feeder poles. Spiked trunk guards where appearance does not matter. Netting over small fruit trees stops squirrels and birds together.

Verdict

A smooth collar is the humane, invisible way to keep squirrels out of a tree, and this sheet makes one for the price of a bag of birdseed. Mount it high, leave it loose and prune the bypass routes.

Peotaotou 15.75 x 78.7 Inch Clear PET Squirrel Baffle and Trunk Guard for Trees and Bird Feeders FAQs

How high should it go?

The bottom at least 5 feet up, so a squirrel cannot jump over it from the ground, and the collar itself at least 2 feet tall. Any branch, fence or roof within 8 or 10 feet gives them a way round.

Will it hurt the tree?

Not if it is loose enough to allow growth and checked each season. A tight collar girdles; leave a finger of slack.

Does it work on feeder poles?

Yes. Wrap it around the pole below the feeder, or form it into a cone. Smooth plastic is the standard feeder baffle principle.

How do I fix it?

Overlap the ends and fasten with cable ties through punched holes or a band of tape, loose enough to slide.
