Makita XMU04Z Review: Cutting Width, Runtime & Limits

The Makita XMU04Z 18V LXT 6-5/16-inch Grass Shear is a compact, one-battery finishing tool for trimming lawn edges, tight spaces and short foliage. Its wide dual-action blade, three grass-height positions and replaceable blade make it more capable than small built-in-battery shears, especially for someone who already owns compatible Makita LXT batteries.

It is not a mower, string trimmer or brush cutter. Owners consistently praise its control around flowers and obstacles, but some say it must be moved slowly for a clean cut and can jam on mulch, gravel or tough material. The official manual says to clear stones, sticks and weeds first, avoid wet grass, cut long grass in stages and never let the blade touch the ground.

The value case depends heavily on battery ownership. XMU04Z means tool only: it includes the grass blade, receiver and blade cover, but no battery, charger or hedge-trimmer blade. Buying into LXT only for this shear can make the complete cost unattractive; existing LXT users can share a pack and avoid that extra platform expense.

Exact model: XMU04Z versus XMU04ZX and XMU05Z

Makita’s suffixes matter. XMU04Z is the 6-5/16-inch grass-shear tool-only package reviewed here. XMU04ZX adds the 8-inch hedge-trimmer blade assembly and related covers/collector pieces; it is not the same box contents. The newer-looking XMU05Z uses a narrower 4-5/16-inch grass blade and is a different model.

The XMU04 platform can accept Makita’s optional 198408-1 hedge-trimmer blade and 198486-1 long-handle attachment. The replacement grass blade is 195267-4. Confirm every part number before ordering because retailer images and pooled reviews frequently mix XMU04Z, XMU04ZX, XMU05Z and unrelated Makita lawn equipment.

Verified specifications and package contents

Makita’s current page promotes up to three hours of runtime with a 5.0Ah BL1850B battery, while its descriptive paragraph says up to 200 minutes. That is an internal ten-minute discrepancy and both are manufacturer maximums, not YardToolLab measurements. Actual runtime varies with battery condition, blade friction, material, temperature and stalls.

What the height adjustment changes

The removable grass receiver acts as a skid and clipping guide. Repositioning it sets the nominal cutting height. The manual lists 15mm (9/16 inch), 20mm (13/16 inch) and 25mm (1 inch), while marketing copy rounds the middle setting to 3/4 inch. Makita also states that height without the receiver is about 10mm (3/8 inch).

These are guidelines, not mower-deck precision. The manual says actual height depends on lawn and ground conditions and recommends a trial cut in an inconspicuous place. Because the blade is only 6-5/16 inches wide and hand-guided, uneven ground and wrist angle can visibly change the finish.

Owner-reported positives

• Control in tight areas: exact-item Home Depot owners repeatedly mention clipping around shrubs, flowers and narrow spaces more precisely than with a string trimmer. A 2025 verified report specifically preferred it for small plants and tight areas.
• Clean cutting when material suits it: the Amazon-hosted pool surfaced by Woot contains many reports praising the sharp, dual-action blade on lawn edges and light foliage. Owners who move calmly through short grass tend to describe better results than those expecting brush-clearing speed.
• Long useful runtime for detail work: owners often say one LXT pack lasts through several short sessions. Those reports support convenience, but they do not verify Makita’s three-hour maximum under a common workload.
• Battery ecosystem advantage: users already invested in 18V LXT value the ability to share batteries. The external, replaceable pack also avoids discarding the whole tool when an internal battery ages.
• Optional versatility: the long handle can reduce kneeling, and the optional hedge blade adds light shrub shaping. Those accessories cost extra and change weight and handling.

Owner-reported negatives and disagreements

• Battery and charger cost: a Woot purchaser initially found that a new battery/charger cost far more than expected relative to the bare shear. Existing LXT owners do not share that objection, making ecosystem ownership the clearest value split.
• It can need a slow pass: one detailed Amazon-hosted owner report says a decent cut requires slow movement. Other owners call it fast for touch-ups, so grass height, density, moisture and expectations likely explain part of the disagreement.
• Debris can jam the teeth: mulch and small gravel are recurring cautions in the Amazon-hosted feedback. Makita’s manual independently warns that foreign matter can jam the blades and instructs users to switch off before removing an obstruction.
• Weight depends on the pack: users describe the grip as comfortable, but larger 4.0Ah or 5.0Ah batteries make prolonged one-handed use more tiring. A smaller compatible pack reduces weight but also reduces runtime.
• Replacement-blade cost and availability: some owners consider 195267-4 expensive or difficult to find. It remains listed by Makita, but local stock and price should be checked before purchase.
• Grass versus shrubs: one 2025 verified Home Depot report found it better for small shrubs and flowers than lawn trimming, while others bought it specifically for lawn edges. The disagreement reinforces that this is a detail shear, not a broad-area cutter.

Review provenance and evidence limits

Home Depot displays about 96 ratings on the XMU04Z page, but its review feed visibly mixes current-item reports with XMU04ZX variants and even unrelated Makita mower reviews. We excluded every report labeled as another product. The exact-item pool includes verified purchases, star-only ratings and at least one Home Depot Reviewer Program entry, so the aggregate cannot be treated as a clean exact-model reliability sample.

Woot exposes an Amazon-hosted pool of more than 600 ratings and labels verified Amazon purchases and Vine reviews when available. Woot’s page also combines multiple review excerpts in a way that can obscure individual boundaries, so we use recurring themes and clearly attributable conditions rather than counting defects. The 2024 “Is It Worth It” demonstration shows the exact model and blade change but discloses Amazon affiliate links; it is useful visual evidence, not an independent laboratory test.

Most detailed owner reports date from 2020–2025, with shorter Home Depot ratings continuing into 2026. No source found provides standardized cutting-speed, noise, vibration or runtime measurements for the exact model. YardToolLab therefore assigns no numerical score.

Safe use and maintenance

• Remove the battery before changing height, clearing jams, cleaning or replacing blades. Wear gloves and fit the blade cover for blade changes.
• Clear rocks, large sticks, wire and heavy weeds before starting. Keep hands, hair, clothing, children and bystanders away from the moving blade.
• Do not use in rain, wet locations or on wet grass. Avoid ground contact, metal fences and other hard objects that can dull, break or kick the blade.
• Cut long lawn in stages rather than taking it down at once. Makita suggests leaving a day or two between reductions to avoid damaging the grass.
• Apply low-viscosity machine or spray lubricant before work and once per hour during extended operation. Afterward, brush debris from both blade sides, wipe and oil them again.
• Do not wash the blades with water or clean with gasoline, thinner or alcohol. Dirt and corrosion increase friction and reduce runtime.

Current warranty conflict

Makita’s current XMU04Z page and current USA warranty FAQ say lithium-ion tools are covered by a three-year limited warranty from original purchase. The older instruction manual still embedded on the product page contains a one-year warranty section. Because the live policy is newer, the three-year statement is the better current signal, but buyers should retain proof of purchase and confirm coverage for their purchase date and region directly with Makita.

Who should buy it?

Choose the XMU04Z if you already own compatible 18V LXT batteries and need controlled trimming around lawn edges, beds, stones or delicate plants. It also makes sense when a replaceable blade and optional standing handle matter more than minimum purchase price.

Choose another tool if you need to clear tall weeds, woody stems, broad lawn areas or long continuous edges quickly. A string trimmer covers more area; a mower maintains turf height more evenly; a full-size hedge trimmer gives more reach and capacity. If you need both small grass and light hedge blades, price the XMU04ZX bundle against adding accessory 198408-1 separately.
