Quick verdict

The GRU01Z brings Makita's XGT platform to trimming with an outer-rotor brushless motor and Automatic Torque Drive that shifts speed to match the load. It is a professional-grade tool with up to an hour of runtime on a 4.0Ah pack, sold bare. The 15 inch swath is narrower than some rivals, and the XGT battery is a separate investment.

XGT Comes to the Yard

Makita’s 40V max XGT platform was designed for tools that outgrew 18V, and the GRU01Z is its mainstream string trimmer. It uses an outer-rotor brushless motor, a design that puts the magnets on the outside for more torque at lower speeds, and Automatic Torque Drive, which shifts motor speed to match the grass in front of it. It is sold as a bare tool.

This review is based on Makita’s specifications and owner feedback. We have not run the trimmer ourselves.

Cutting Performance

Owners describe the GRU01Z as a trimmer that behaves like a professional gas unit: steady head speed under load and no sense of the motor straining. Automatic Torque Drive runs at 3,500 rpm for light grass and jumps toward 6,500 rpm when resistance increases, then settles back. The practical effect is less noise and longer runtime during ordinary trimming, with full power available the moment it is needed. Makita claims up to twice the sustained power of its comparable 18V tool under heavy load, which is consistent with how owners describe it on dense growth.

Swath and Line

The 15 inch swath is a touch narrower than the 16 and 17 inch heads from EGO and Ryobi. On tight residential work the difference is negligible; on long open runs it costs a few minutes. The head is a bump feed that accepts standard 0.095 line, and reloading is conventional.

Runtime

Makita quotes up to one hour on a 4.0Ah XGT battery, and owners confirm the trimmer is frugal in Torque Drive mode. That is excellent for a professional tool and more than most homeowners need in a session. Because XGT batteries also power Makita’s saws, blowers and drills, landscapers already on the platform can share packs across the truck.

Build and Comfort

The GRU01Z is built to Makita’s professional standard, with weather-resistant construction and a sturdy loop handle. It is heavier than consumer trimmers, which is the price of that construction. Balance is good with a 4.0Ah pack and vibration is low.

The XGT Question

The main obstacle for homeowners is cost. XGT batteries and chargers are priced for professionals, and anyone starting from zero will spend considerably more than on an EGO or Greenworks kit. For contractors who already own XGT tools, the calculation flips and this becomes an easy addition.

Noise and Vibration

The outer-rotor motor runs smoothly and in the low Torque Drive setting the GRU01Z is one of the quieter trimmers in its class, since the motor idles well below full speed until it is needed. Anti-vibration mounts between the motor and loop handle keep hand fatigue low across a full working day, which is the professional priority this tool is built around. Owners coming from two-stroke trimmers describe the change as transformative; owners coming from other battery trimmers notice it less but still rate the refinement highly.

Alternatives to Consider

Makita’s 18V LXT X2 trimmers suit people with large LXT battery collections. The EGO ST1623T offers a wider swath and Powerload for less money as a kit. The Husqvarna 330iKL is the other professional-leaning option with attachment capability.

Verdict

The GRU01Z is a professional trimmer with runtime and refinement to match. Its value depends on whether you already own XGT batteries. For those who do, it is one of the best trimmers available; for everyone else, it is a premium purchase that requires buying into a second battery system.

Makita GRU01Z 40V max XGT Brushless 15 Inch String Trimmer FAQs

What is Automatic Torque Drive?

A mode that runs the motor at a lower speed for runtime and automatically shifts up to 6,500 rpm when the head meets heavier growth, then drops back when the load eases.

Will my 18V LXT batteries fit?

No. XGT is a separate 40V max platform with its own batteries and chargers. LXT packs are not compatible.

Is 15 inches enough swath?

For most residential and light commercial trimming, yes. Wide open fence lines go a little slower than with a 16 or 17 inch trimmer.

How long does it run?

Makita quotes up to an hour with a 4.0Ah XGT battery in Automatic Torque Drive. Constant full-speed cutting shortens that.
