Quick verdict

The Compost Crank is a 46 inch corkscrew aerator in solid 3/8 inch stainless steel with free-spinning nylon handles, handcrafted in Arizona by the family that invented the design in 1992 and backed for life. Crank it clockwise into a bin, lift without turning, and it pulls compost up from the bottom and works through vines that jam lesser tools. It costs several times a generic aerator and lasts several lifetimes.

The Tool the Imports Copy

Every corkscrew compost aerator on the market traces back to the Compost Crank, which the Ambrose family has made in Tucson, Arizona, since 1992 on machinery they built from recycled parts. It is a 46 inch stainless corkscrew with free-spinning handles that you crank into a bin and lift straight out, bringing compost up from the bottom and leaving air behind. Lotech backs it for life.

This review is based on Lotech’s specifications and on the long record of owner feedback for this tool. We have not used it ourselves.

Design

The shaft and spiral are a single piece of solid 3/8 inch stainless steel, thick enough not to flex in dense compost and immune to rust. The spiral is 3 3/4 inches wide and 6 inches tall, with an effective working depth of 30 inches from the tip to the first bend. The handles are glass-filled nylon on stainless washers and spin freely, so you crank continuously without letting go and regripping, which is the detail that makes it so much easier than fixed-handle copies.

In Use

Set the tip on the compost, crank clockwise and the spiral screws itself down. Lift without turning and it carries a column of material up, leaving a channel for air. The narrow spiral reaches bin corners and, in the maker’s words, works through vines and other troublesome ingredients that jam wider blades. Owners describe aerating a full bin in a few minutes once a week.

Durability

This is where the price goes. Owners report Compost Cranks bought decades ago still in daily use, and the lifetime limited warranty reflects that the company expects it. There is nothing to wear out except the user.

Value

It costs several times what an imported coated-steel aerator does. Those tools work, bend eventually and rust at scratches. The Crank is the buy-once choice, and for a tool used weekly for years the difference per season is small.

Who Should Buy It

  • Owners of enclosed compost bins who aerate regularly.
  • Anyone who has bent or rusted a cheaper aerator.
  • Buyers who prefer American-made tools with a lifetime warranty.

Common Owner Complaints

Price is the only recurring one. Performance and durability complaints are essentially absent.

Alternatives to Consider

Imported corkscrew aerators such as the Moonateen tool cost a fraction and suit light use. Wing-type aerators move more per stroke in loose piles. A compost tumbler removes the need to aerate by hand.

Verdict

If you compost in a bin and intend to keep doing so, the Compost Crank is the aerator to buy once. It is the original, it is stainless, it is handmade and it is guaranteed for life. The only argument against it is the price, and the warranty answers that.

Lotech Products Compost Crank Stainless Steel Compost Aerator FAQs

How is it different from cheaper corkscrew aerators?

Solid stainless rod instead of coated steel, free-spinning handles that let you crank without regripping, and a lifetime warranty. The design is the original the others copy.

How do I use it?

Place the tip on the compost, crank clockwise until the spiral is buried, then lift straight up without turning. The spiral brings material up and leaves an air channel.

Does it work in a plastic bin?

Yes, that is its purpose. The 3 3/4 inch spiral fits through any bin opening and reaches the corners.

Will it rust?

No. Solid stainless steel is why the warranty is for life.
