Quick verdict

Everything for laying out a straight, level fence or wall: 540 feet of #18 braided dual-colour mason line on a reloadable reel, five small line levels that hang on the string and a post level with a rubber strap. Run the line between end posts, hang a level on it and every post in between is set to the string. The dual colour shows against both dark soil and light stone. It is the kit that stops a fence wandering.

A Straight Fence Starts With a String

Fences wander because each post was set by eye. The fix is older than the fence: a tight line between the end posts and every post set to it. Konvixon’s kit bundles the parts: 540 feet of #18 braided dual-colour mason line on a reloadable reel, five line levels that clip onto the string and a post level with a rubber strap for plumbing each post.

This review is based on the listing specifications and on how mason line and line levels are used in fence and masonry layout generally. We have not used this kit ourselves and the brand is a generic importer.

The Line

Eight-strand braided nylon holds tension without stretching and does not unravel the way twisted line does. The alternating colours stand out against dark soil, green grass and pale concrete, which matters when you are sighting along it. Five hundred and forty feet is several fence runs or many brick courses.

Layout

Plumb the two end posts with the post level and brace them. Tie the line to each at the height of the top rail and pull it tight. Hang a line level at the middle of the span to check the line is level or at the grade you want. Set each intermediate post so it just touches the line, plumb it with the post level, and the fence runs straight and even. The same method lays brick and block courses, deck ledgers and patio edges.

Line Levels

A line level is accurate when the line is tight and the level sits in the middle of the span, and reliable to about 30 feet. For longer runs, break the line at intermediate stakes or use a laser. Five levels mean several spans can be checked at once.

The Reel

Winding the line back onto the reel after every job is what keeps mason line from becoming a bird’s nest. The reel is plastic and sensible to keep out from under the truck.

Who Should Buy It

  • Anyone building a fence longer than a few posts.
  • DIY bricklayers and wall builders keeping courses straight.
  • Deck and patio builders laying out edges and ledgers.

Common Owner Complaints

Line levels disagreeing over long spans and the plastic reel. Keep spans short; keep the reel off the ground.

Alternatives to Consider

A rotary laser level is the precision upgrade for grading and long runs. Stringliner reels are the branded alternative for line alone. A water level is the old cheap method for long distances.

Verdict

For the price of a couple of fence posts, this kit gives the line, levels and post level that make a fence straight and plumb from end to end. Pull the line tight, keep the spans short and set every post to the string.

Konvixon 540 ft Dual-Colour Braided Mason Line Kit with Reel, Post Level and 5 Line Levels FAQs

How do I lay out a fence with it?

Set the two end posts plumb with the post level. Tie the line to them at the top, pull it tight and hang a line level in the middle. Every intermediate post is set to touch the line and plumbed with the post level.

Why braided line?

Twisted line stretches and unravels; braided #18 holds tension, pulls straight and lasts. Dual colour keeps it visible against soil, grass and stone.

How accurate is a line level?

Good over a span of 25 to 30 feet with the line tight and the level in the middle. On longer runs, use intermediate stakes or a laser level.

What is the reel for?

Winding the line back after use so it is ready for the next job. Loose mason line tangles into waste.
