The Fiskars 339950-1001 Stand-up Weed Puller (4-claw) is an effective spot-weeding tool when its serrated claws can enter slightly moist, relatively open soil around a centralized root. Its long shaft, foot platform and eject slider let the operator remove many dandelions without kneeling or handling each weed.
It is not equally effective on every weed or soil. Independent tests and owners report weaker results in dry compacted clay, rocky ground, fibrous spreading weeds and very large roots. The other material concern is durability: recent owner pools repeatedly mention plastic parts, slipping jaws, broken eject mechanisms or claw assemblies. Fiskars advertises a lifetime warranty, but owners report both smooth replacements and frustrating claims.
Exact model and variant warning
Fiskars identifies the current US product as article 339950-1001. It has four serrated stainless-steel claws, a lightweight aluminum shaft, an offset handle, a reinforced foot platform with a viewing window and a handle-operated easy-eject mechanism. The official length is 39.25 inches, commonly marketed as 39 inches.
Do not blend it with the extendable D-handle four-claw model 339960/1023083, the 378700 four-claw variant or the three-claw designs. Home Depot’s listing uses article 1023084 and describes a 34-inch handle, so its dimensions are not treated as exact 339950-1001 measurements even though its operating design and owner complaints are closely related.

Fiskars’ specification table currently shows a weight of 2.3 ounces, which is not credible for this full-length tool. Independent evaluated/listed figures are roughly 2.3 to 2.5 pounds. We treat the official ounce value as a probable catalog error rather than repeating it as fact.
How to get a complete pull
Center the viewing window over the crown, push the claws fully into the soil with the foot platform, then lean the handle sideways so the mechanism closes around the root. Pulling straight upward without the levering motion can leave the weed behind. Bob Vila’s independent tester initially failed for this reason, then removed weeds successfully after following the shaft instructions.
Use the eject slider over a bucket to release the weed. Work after light rain or watering when the soil is damp but not muddy. Moisture is one of the strongest agreement points: Bob Vila achieved the best results in loose soil the day after rain, and verified Walmart and Home Depot owners make the same recommendation.
What owners and testers consistently like
- Less bending: recent verified Walmart and Canadian Tire owners repeatedly value working upright, especially for repeated dandelion removal.
- Fast on centralized roots: when correctly centered, the claws can remove a dandelion or thistle root in one lever-and-eject cycle.
- Light and ready to use: owners praise the low carried weight and no-assembly setup.
- Cleaner workflow: the eject slider drops weeds directly into a bucket without touching them.
- Long service is possible: a recent Fiskars-syndicated owner reports about 20 years from an older four-prong tool, while a verified Canadian Tire purchaser reports four years of frequent use before replacement. These individual histories are not a durability guarantee for every production revision.
Soil and weed-type limits
Bob Vila’s controlled yard test found the tool effective in loose, aerated soil and only partly successful in dry compacted clay, mainly on smaller roots. Fiskars’ own product expert similarly advises watering or loosening dense red clay first. Rocks can block claw penetration or prevent the jaws from closing around the root.
The mechanism works best on a single central root. Fiskars says mature crabgrass, with spreading stems and fibrous roots, is harder to remove completely. Very thin seedlings may slip between the claws, while a large woody or branching root can overload the jaw mechanism. Complete pulls also remove a plug of soil. Verified Canadian Tire owners describe golf-ball to tennis-ball-size holes, and a recent Home Depot owner saw small holes across a heavily infested soft lawn. Tamp the plug area closed and reseed if necessary; this is a spot tool, not a no-disturbance solution.
Durability and warranty signals
- Plastic housing or release breakage: this is the most repeated negative across Home Depot, Walmart, Target/Fiskars-syndicated and Canadian Tire feedback. Some failures occur on first use; others follow several seasons.
- Jaws stop closing: owners describe clicking, slipping or incomplete closure after the internal mechanism wears or cracks.
- Roots snapping instead of extracting: placement, dry soil and root size matter, but a weak or damaged jaw mechanism can also leave the taproot behind.
- Warranty outcomes vary: one verified Canadian Tire owner received a replacement after four years, and another reports quick in-store exchange. Other Fiskars-syndicated owners say their claim was not honored. Keep the receipt, photograph the article number and check the current claim process before discarding a broken tool.
Do not put your full body weight on plastic areas or twist against a rock or woody root. If the claws will not penetrate, water the area or switch to a digging tool instead of forcing the mechanism.
Review provenance and evidence limits
Walmart marks many current entries as verified purchases, including 2026 reports about ease of use after rain. Canadian Tire shows verified-purchaser status and identifies incentivized reviews where applicable. Home Depot offers a verified-purchase filter but also syndicates comments from Fiskars, so the visible total is not treated as a completely independent owner pool.

Best fit and alternatives
Best fit: scattered dandelions and thistles in slightly moist lawn soil; users who want to remain standing; chemical-free spot removal; and jobs where leaving a small soil plug is acceptable.
