Two numbers decide how well a garden hose waters: water pressure, measured in PSI, and flow rate, measured in gallons per minute (GPM). Pressure is the force pushing the water, and flow rate is how much water actually comes out. Understanding both helps you fix a weak stream and choose the right hose.

Pressure (PSI) vs flow rate (GPM)

Pressure is set mostly by your home’s water supply, typically 40 to 60 PSI. Flow rate depends on that pressure plus the hose diameter and length. You can have decent pressure but poor flow if the hose is too narrow or too long. A standard outdoor tap delivers roughly 9 to 17 GPM at the spigot, but the hose and nozzle reduce that at the far end.

What lowers your flow

  • Narrow diameter: a 1/2 inch hose carries far less water than 5/8 or 3/4 inch. See our garden hose sizes guide.
  • Excess length: every extra foot loses a little pressure to friction, so a 100 foot hose delivers less at the nozzle than a 25 foot one.
  • Kinks and clogs: a single kink or a clogged nozzle can cut flow dramatically.
  • Cheap fittings: restrictive or leaking couplings bleed off pressure.

How to improve pressure and flow

Use the shortest hose that reaches, step up to a 5/8 or 3/4 inch diameter for high-volume tasks, remove inline restrictions, and keep the hose kink-free. If pressure is genuinely low at the source, that is a plumbing issue rather than a hose problem. For pressure-washer feeds and sprinklers, always match the hose diameter to the tool’s flow requirement.
