Visiting Acme Lumber & Building Supply
Acme Lumber & Building Supply is an independent hardware store in Chicago, Illinois, at 7855 South Greenwood Avenue. For gardeners in and around Chicago it is a local, staffed alternative to the big-box aisles, the kind of place where you can see plants in person and get advice suited to your own yard.
Growing conditions in Chicago
The Midwest climate here is continental (often USDA zones 4 to 6) with hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters, so timing and hardiness matter. That makes a nearby store genuinely useful, because its stock leans toward hardy perennials, sweet corn and tomatoes, spring and fall vegetables, and cold-tolerant trees and shrubs that actually do well here. It is worth asking staff about right-plant, right-place choices for your specific spot, soil and sun.
What you will find
The store generally stocks tools and fasteners, paint and plumbing and electrical supplies, and a garden section with soil, plants, hoses, fertiliser and outdoor-power basics, with the mix rotating by season.
